When felt polishing produces haze, new scratches or residue, inspect the starting surface, wheel condition, compound and cleanup method before changing the machine setting. Several causes can look similar. Record the symptom and change one verified process variable at a time; do not assume more speed or pressure will improve the finish.
Separate the defect from the residue
Inspect the part using a cleanup method suitable for its material or coating and consistent with the compound instructions. A residue film and an actual surface defect require different responses. Photograph the surface under consistent lighting and compare it with the approved reference, including edges and recesses.
Trace recurring scratches
Check whether scratches were present before polishing. Review stage separation, wheel storage and possible contamination. Confirm that the same wheel has not been assigned to incompatible compounds or an earlier cutting operation. Replace or service consumables only according to their instructions; an improvised repair can introduce another variable.
Review the finishing sequence
If haze remains after an otherwise acceptable process, verify that the wheel and compound were selected for that finishing stage. Do not treat a coarse preparation operation as a guaranteed final polishing process. For wool pads on coatings, a separate finishing step may be appropriate for the specific system; that does not establish a universal rule for dense felt wheels.
Turn a successful correction into a record
Once a trial meets the target, record exactly what changed. Update the process sheet and keep the accepted sample reference. If heat effects, unstable mounting or unexpected vibration occur, stop the trial and investigate equipment and consumable compatibility before further use.
