A felt wheel should be selected for a defined stage in the finishing process. First identify the starting defects, then decide what preparation and final polishing are needed. Approve the sequence on a representative part; a mirror-like appearance is not guaranteed by choosing a felt wheel or a particular compound color.
Describe the starting defect
Distinguish visible scratches, surface texture, oxidation, residue and coating defects. These descriptions do not establish the same treatment. Record the part material and any coating before selecting a trial. If the substrate cannot tolerate the proposed operation, choose another process with qualified application support.
Define a handoff between stages
Give the preceding stage an acceptance condition that the polishing stage can work with. Without this handoff, operators may try to correct inconsistent preparation during final polishing. Retain a reference piece or a documented inspection method for the prepared surface.
Keep each polishing stage identifiable
Identify the wheel and compound used for each approved step. Follow their application, storage and cleanup instructions. A wheel assigned to an earlier step should not be silently reused for a different finishing compound. Color descriptions alone are not a universal compound grading system.
Approve the final result after appropriate cleanup
Inspect the finish using consistent lighting and any required measurements. Check the part’s difficult features as well as broad faces. Record the complete sequence and the acceptance decision, including what would require another trial.
Practical checklist
| Check | What to record | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Starting surface | Defect description and material | Choose an appropriate preparation trial |
| Prepared surface | Agreed handoff reference | Confirm readiness for polishing |
| Polishing stage | Assigned wheel and compound | Keep the sequence traceable |
| Final result | Appearance and relevant measurements | Approve the process, not just a photograph |
Questions buyers ask
Does a finer compound always remove a visible scratch?
Not necessarily. The starting defect may require a different preparation step. Test the proposed sequence.
Can I select a compound by color alone?
No. Check the manufacturer’s product identity, intended use and instructions.
