For precision parts, felt-wheel selection should begin with the feature that must be polished and the dimensions that must be preserved. Match the wheel geometry and mounting to the available access, then test the finish against a defined reference. A brighter surface alone does not prove that a precision part still meets its dimensional requirements.
Describe the feature, not just the material
Identify flat faces, small radii, bores, shoulders or recessed features on a drawing. Mark areas that must remain unchanged and any dimensions requiring inspection. A supplier can discuss available wheel forms more usefully when the access limits and finish requirement are explicit.
Compare wheel forms by access
A disc, cylindrical mounted head and pointed profile contact the workpiece differently. Choose candidates by geometry and equipment compatibility, not by an assumption that the smallest tool is always more precise. Confirm head and shank dimensions and any restrictions in the supplied instructions.
Include measurement in sample approval
Use the same agreed method to inspect the relevant dimensions before and after the trial. Record the finish separately from dimensional results. The person approving appearance may need different evidence from the person responsible for fit or geometry. Agree both before accepting the sample.
Keep approved variants distinct
Similar-looking heads may have different felt grades or dimensions. Use a supplier reference and internal identifier for each approved variant. Record the compound and process that produced the result so a reorder is based on a complete specification rather than a photograph alone.
Practical checklist
| Check | What to record | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Part feature | Drawing and access restrictions | Select candidate geometry |
| Critical dimension | Measurement method and acceptance requirement | Check before and after the trial |
| Mounted tool | Head, shank and equipment requirements | Verify compatibility |
| Approved variant | Reference, grade and process record | Support consistent reorders |
Questions buyers ask
Does softer felt always protect dimensions better?
Do not assume this from a grade name. The result depends on the whole process and must be checked on the actual part.
What should accompany a custom-head inquiry?
Provide a drawing, dimensions, intended equipment and finish requirement, plus a sample or reference image when available.
Products and next steps
Send the exact product reference, dimensions with units, workpiece, equipment, sample quantity and destination when requesting a quotation. Product ratings, available specifications and commercial terms must be confirmed for the item supplied.
