“Mirror finish” is a useful starting description, but it is not a complete acceptance specification. Agree a reference surface, inspection conditions and any required measurements before a felt-wheel trial. Evaluate the cleaned result on the actual material and geometry rather than approving a supplier photograph alone.
Use a reference that represents the part
Choose a reference with the relevant material, finish and feature geometry. Explain which features matter most: broad faces, edges, bores or decorative details. Do not assume one polished sample demonstrates the same result on every alloy or coating.
Keep visual inspection consistent
Define how the part will be cleaned and viewed, using methods suitable for the material and compound. Use consistent lighting and comparison conditions. Photographs can record differences, but exposure and reflections can make separate images difficult to compare.
Add measurements when the drawing requires them
Appearance and dimensional acceptance are different decisions. If surface texture or dimensional requirements exist, specify the agreed measurement method and criterion. Do not convert an attractive reflection into an unsupported roughness value or numerical performance claim.
Record the process behind the accepted finish
Identify wheel, grade, compound, preparation and equipment setup. Keep the accepted sample connected to that record. A change in process or product requires review even if the marketing description still says “mirror polishing”.
Practical checklist
| Check | What to record | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Material, geometry and accepted appearance | Make the target concrete |
| Viewing | Cleanup and lighting conditions | Compare consistently |
| Measurement | Drawing requirements and method | Separate appearance from numerical claims |
| Process | Complete consumable and setup record | Support repeatability |
Questions buyers ask
Can a photograph prove a specified surface roughness?
No. A numerical requirement needs the agreed measurement method, not a visual estimate.
Can the same felt wheel produce the same finish on every part?
No such guarantee follows from the wheel name. Test the actual material, geometry and process.
Products and next steps
Send the exact product reference, dimensions with units, workpiece, equipment, sample quantity and destination when requesting a quotation. Product ratings, available specifications and commercial terms must be confirmed for the item supplied.
